Made to Measure Curtains

We have created several bird print the perfect scale for making into curtains, our feathered friends being one of Vanessa’s passions in life! She has binoculars in her bedroom and bathroom windows ready to catch glimpses of the nesting Kestrels and Red Kites in her barn’s nesting boxes. Small garden birds must be the most amazing creatures…taking weeks to create the most beautiful and intricately woven nests…

Here are our bird print curtain fabrics:

The very first bird design she created over 22 years ago now is Cockerel and Spot. This bird fabric was inspired by the hens and cockerels in her garden.

This was closely followed by Up In The Air featuring swallows flying and swooping in circles in the sky.

Dawn Chorus is a bird depicting stylised garden birds showing their delightful markings of spots and stripes. This 1950s style curtain fabric is inspired by mid-century designers such as Lucienne Day. It is possible to use these designs in both children's rooms and adult’s spaces.

The bird fabric Bird Hop was created by her younger daughter Flora, it depicts a characterful and friendly bird. She created this shape by cutting straight into a piece of paper without drawing first and this crisp spontaneous line is the result.

Songbirds fabric, shows a small garden bird sitting amongst the foliage of hedgerow Dog Roses. This bird was inspired by a visit to Arbuthnott House in Scotland where Vanessa spied a very old woven silk, covering a chez-long with this beautiful black bird on it.

Branching Out and In Full Flight are two bird print fabrics which were inspired by lino cuts and printmaking. They show flying stylized birds set within a leafy trellis.

All these designs have interest and fascination for children and adults alike. The beautiful colours of these bird fabrics mean they can be used for curtains in all rooms in the house.

These blind, upholstery bird print curtain fabrics are printed on a wonderful Linen Union. The organic cotton mixed with eco Linen is the best material for cushion covers.  In addition, a lampshade made from one of these bird fabrics would be great focal point in a room, as would a chair, cushions and even a quilt. We can make all these especially for you in at our Made to Measure service.

How to measure up for your curtains:

A video guide to help to measure up

Please remember that pattern repeats and fabric widths are automatically calculated if you order through our web site. It is advisable to fit your pole or track before ordering your curtains. Your pole or track should ideally extend 30cms on each side of the window so when drawn back light is maximised and at least 15cms above the top of the window to block out as little light as possible again. Please use metric units only when measuring.

Poles:

WidthIf you have a pole, measure the distance between the finials. (A)

Finished Length for pencil pleat, triple pleat, double pleat and inverted pleat - when measuring the finished length using a curtain pole, we recommend allowing between 2cms and 5cms above the eyelet on the underside of the curtain ring, depending on how much of the pole and rings you wish to hide. From the measurement you choose above the eyelet, measure down to the bottom of the hem (see B & C) and that is your finished length measurement.

Finished length for cottage pleat (choice of either 5cm or 10cm depth - see below)- these have to be made using a 3cm single position tape, which makes the finished length non adjustable. To measure the finished length for this header, please provide us with the distance from the eyelet to the floor, and depending on your choice of depth, add 5cm or 10cm accordingly.

Finished length for flop over frill - these curtains have to be made with a 3cm single position tape which makes the finished length non adjustable. To measure the finished length for this header, just give us the measurement from the eyelet to the floor. Don't add any extra for the frill, we will do that.

Please note, we will add 25cm for hem allowance.

Finished length for cottage pleat (choice of either 5cm or 10cm depth - see below)- these have to be made using a 3cm single position tape, which makes the finished length non adjustable.
